What exactly makes your fur baby fart? I know, not a very pleasant topic. Here are some of the reasons your little darling(s) may have intestinal issues.Personally, I think it depends on what you’re feeding your little dahlinks. If you feed them cheap food, it’ll come out one end or the other!
Feline farting is actually not that common. If your kitty is all of a sudden pinching out those SBDs, there may be some underlying GI (gastrointestinal) issue or issues.
Some things that may cause kitty pooting are:
A change in diet (perhaps without the old standard 7 to 10 transition period). Every cat is different as you’ve probably been told by the professionals a kazillion times. Some cats are just ultra sensitive. To EVERYTHING.
- Diets with too much fiber – there are types of fiber that produce gas and/or a protein source kitty is sensitive to – hey, this even goes for us Hoomans!
- Intestinal parasites (GADS!) Get that poo sample to the Vet STAT!
- Some kind of bacterial or viral infection – you’re probably on your way to the Vet as we speak
- IBD – yes, cats apparently get this too.
Certain treats – you never know about these things. It’s a crap shoot – ha ha. No pun intended.
The list can go on. But I won’t do that to you.
Treatments will vary depending on what the doc finds after a full exam. They might recommend a food with lower carbs or a new protein source (canned of course). Nix the peas, lentils or beans please! I’ve heard that the professionals often prescribe medications such as simethicone – it apparently reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles.
There’s also deworming if necessary, and (get this) vitamin B12 injections (really?), antibiotics, ir immune suppressing meds. Cha-CHING – oh why oh why are veterinary services so FREAKING expensive??!! But – that’s fodder for another story.
Hope this little ditty has given you some incite into something you probably had no interest in but are much better off knowing a bit about.
Ciao for now,
