The Human Attention Span Has Been Recalled by the Manufacturer

Humans can’t sit still for five minutes anymore.

They’re doomscrolling…
checking email…
watching six-second videos…
starting hobbies…
forgetting why they walked into the kitchen…

…while cats spend forty-five uninterrupted minutes watching absolutely nothing happen outside a window.

The joke?

The cats are the only creatures in the house capable of sustained concentration.

Editor’s Note

Every week, Mika and Koji insist on conducting a formal review of household operations. Every week, they reach the same conclusion: the cats are doing an excellent job, while the humans appear to be one browser tab away from wandering into the neighbor’s yard looking for their glasses… which are already on their head.

The Weekly Management Report

We have spent the past seven days observing our human. The findings are troubling.

She sat down to answer one email. One. Somehow that led to checking the weather, reading the news, watching a video about organizing kitchen drawers, and pricing yarn that she absolutely does not need. Ninety minutes later the email remained untouched.

Humans call this ‘being productive.’ We call it ‘wandering around the litter box without ever getting in.’

Cats Understand Focus

We can watch a bird for forty-five uninterrupted minutes. We can devote an entire afternoon to stalking a dust bunny that may or may not have insulted our human’s family.

Neither of us checks notifications. Neither of us interrupts a perfectly good nap because someone on the internet has a terrible opinion.

When it is Bird Watching Time, we watch birds.
When it is Nap Time, we nap.
When it is Dinner Time… well… we make certain everyone else knows it is Dinner Time too.

The Human Condition

Our human frequently walks into a room, stops, blinks twice, and quietly asks, ‘Why did I come in here?’

We cannot help. We have forgotten what she was doing as well. We were busy supervising a sunbeam.

Humans seem determined to experience every thought all at once. They scroll while eating. They watch television while staring at a phone. They listen to a podcast while answering email while wondering why they’re exhausted.

Meanwhile, a butterfly floats past the window and they miss the entire performance.

Management Recommendations

If you borrow anything from cats this week, borrow this:

  • Observe more than you react.
  • Protect your peace.
  • Finish one thing before starting three others.
  • Watch birds when birds are available.
  • Pet a cat whenever possible.
  • Ignore at least one completely unnecessary notification.

The world has become addicted to urgency. Cats remain committed to treat time.

A Small Challenge

Spend fifteen uninterrupted minutes doing exactly one thing today. Drink your coffee. Read a chapter. Knit or crochet a few rows. Sew a couple seams. Finish putting that cute little knit pouch together (lining, drawstring, etc.) Sit outside. Watch your cat investigate absolutely nothing with complete confidence.

You may discover that your brain has been waiting for permission to slow down.

Management’s Final Report

From where we are sitting, humans don’t look lazy.

They look tired.
Distracted.
Overloaded.

Perhaps the greatest luxury left isn’t another gadget or another app. Perhaps it’s a quiet room, a comfortable chair, a sleeping cat, and enough peace to hear yourself think.

Now, if you’ll excuse us (the management team – Mika and Koji), there is a sunbeam in our human’s craft studio window. It arrived exactly on schedule, has never demanded a software update, and continues to outperform every productivity system humans have invented.

Yours in meowness,

Mika and Koji
