Tiny Things Keeping Us Sane Right Now

There’s a very specific kind of exhaustion floating around lately.

Not just “I need a nap” exhaustion. More like:
“I have seventeen tabs open in my brain, the economy is weird, my to-do list is judging me, and if one more thing breaks in this house I may dissolve into glitter and cat hair.”

That kind of exhaustion.

And yet somehow… we keep going.

Not because life suddenly gets easier.
Not because we magically become organized productivity gurus.
But because of tiny things.Tiny rituals.
Tiny comforts.
Tiny ridiculous moments that quietly keep us stitched together.

For me, some of those moments involve coffee, warm lighting, creative chaos, and two furry little supervisors who contribute absolutely nothing financially to this household.

Koji, my handsome little black cat with his distinguished white chest spot, operates mostly as emotional support management. He appears when morale is low, flops dramatically nearby, and reminds me that maybe not every problem has to be solved in the next ten minutes.

Then there’s Mika.
Tiny tortie diva.
Professional boundary violator.
Silent negotiator.

Mika does not scream for food.

No, no.
That would be too straightforward.

Instead, she silently appears directly in my face the moment she has decided it’s time to eat. She will stare into my soul with the intensity of someone collecting overdue rent. If I dare ignore her, she escalates strategically by hunting down paper or plastic to chew on somewhere in the house like a tiny fuzzy raccoon with a personal vendetta.

Nothing motivates a human quite like hearing suspicious crinkling sounds from another room.

And honestly? As ridiculous as these little moments are… they help.

Because life lately can feel heavy.
Expensive.
Uncertain.
Overwhelming.

Running a small creative business in 2026 sometimes feels like trying to juggle flaming torches while riding a shopping cart downhill through a Wi-Fi dead zone. One minute you’re designing something beautiful, the next you’re troubleshooting printers, calculating shipping costs, answering emails, wondering if social media algorithms secretly hate you, and trying not to cry because your heat press suddenly decided to become “temperamental.”

But tiny things soften the edges.

Fresh sheets.
A candle burning while you work.
A favorite playlist.
Rain against the windows.
A cat sleeping nearby.
That first sip of coffee before the world starts demanding things from you.
Finishing one small creative project when your brain insisted you couldn’t.

Tiny victories matter.

I think we underestimate how much survival is built from little moments instead of giant breakthroughs.

Sometimes healing isn’t a luxury vacation or a perfect life makeover.
Sometimes it’s laughing because your cat looks personally offended by the existence of vegetables.

Sometimes it’s reorganizing your desk for the fifth time because it gives your brain the illusion of control.

Sometimes it’s making something with your hands simply because creating reminds you that you still can.

And maybe that’s enough for now.

Maybe we don’t need to have everything figured out immediately.
Maybe it’s okay if some seasons of life are less about thriving and more about quietly rebuilding ourselves one tiny comfort at a time.

So if you’ve been feeling stretched thin lately, this is your reminder to pay attention to the little things keeping you grounded.

The cozy routines.
The small joys.
The pets.
The music.
The tiny rituals that make life feel softer.

Those things matter more than we realize.

Even if they occasionally eat plastic to prove a point.

Ciao,

Democracy, Dinner Bowls & Dangerous Hairballs

From the Editor’s Desk

Every week, I sit down at my keyboard with a cup of coffee and the noble intention of writing something sensible about cats, creativity, or life in general.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your perspective), I share my office with two feline political analysts—Mika the Tortie Weenie Queenie and Koji, Chief Inspector of Household Affairs—who insist on contributing their opinions about current events.

As any cat servant knows, arguing with cats is generally a losing proposition. So, in the interest of journalistic integrity, I have once again agreed to transcribe their observations for publication.

The views expressed below are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of management. Although, if I’m being honest, management occasionally finds herself nodding in agreement.

Democracy, Dinner Bowls & Dangerous Hairballs

A Cat’s View of the Current State of the Litter Box

By Mika and Koji St. Germain – The Kitty Chroniclers at the Scratching Post Press

Greetings, loyal subjects.

As we sit atop our favorite cat tree, surveying our kingdom with the wisdom only felines can possess, we find ourselves increasingly concerned about the state of the giant human litter box known as America.

Now, before anyone starts hissing, let’s clarify something. Cats don’t care much about political parties. We don’t register to vote. We don’t attend rallies. We don’t put bumper stickers on the scratching post.

What we do understand is behavior.

And lately, from a cat’s perspective, the behavior has been… concerning.

Cats recognize certain warning signs. We know the difference between confidence and arrogance. Leadership and bullying. Strength and insecurity. We can spot a puffed-up tomcat trying to look bigger than he really is from three houses away.

In fact, if the average housecat behaved the way many politicians do these days, we’d be escorted directly to the VET (yikes!) for a behavioral consultation.

Take the current political climate.

Every day seems to bring a fresh serving of outrage, finger-pointing, chest-thumping, and reality-bending. Entire rooms full of grown adults appear determined to tell everyone that what they can clearly see isn’t actually happening.

Cats know a thing or two about gaslighting. We invented it.

We stare directly at an object before knocking it off the table and then act shocked when it crashes to the floor.

But even we have limits.

Then there’s the cult of personality problem.

Now, every cat secretly believes the world revolves around them. That’s simply part of the job description. But even the most self-important feline understands that a household functions because multiple beings cooperate. Someone fills the food bowl. Someone cleans the litter box. Someone pays the mortgage.

You can’t run an entire house on ego alone.

Yet here we are.

Watching politicians line up like eager kittens waiting for treats, praising every statement, every decision, every social media post as though independent thought has been discontinued.

Cats find this deeply suspicious.

If ten cats suddenly agree on everything, one of them is definitely plotting something.

Perhaps what concerns me most is the growing tendency to treat disagreement as disloyalty.

A healthy household doesn’t work that way.

If our human moves our food dish next to the vacuum cleaner, we’re going to voice our objections. Loudly. At 3:17 in the morning.

That’s not rebellion.

That’s feedback.

Democracy, much like a multicat household, gets messy sometimes. There are disagreements. Competing interests. Occasional screaming matches over resources.

But that’s part of the process.

The alternative is one cat deciding where everyone sleeps, what everyone eats, and who gets access to the sunny spot by the window.

Trust us.

No one wants that cat in charge.

Well… except that cat.

The lesson here isn’t about Republicans versus Democrats.

It’s about maintaining the ability to think critically, ask questions, challenge authority, and recognize when someone is trying to distract you with shiny objects while quietly raiding the treat jar.

Cats excel at observation.

We notice patterns.

We notice who creates chaos and who solves it.

We notice who demands loyalty and who earns trust.

Most importantly, we notice who keeps showing up when things get difficult.

The world is noisy right now.

Everyone is yelling.

Everyone is selling certainty.

Everyone claims to have all the answers.

Meanwhile, cats continue practicing a far more sensible approach.

Observe carefully.

Question everything.

Protect the vulnerable.

Don’t follow the crowd off the counter.

And if someone keeps insisting they’re the greatest thing that’s ever happened to civilization, maybe check whether they’re standing in a pile of their own mess while saying it.

Just a thought.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we have important business to attend to.

Namely staring at a wall for twenty-seven minutes and then sprinting through the house for reasons that remain classified.

Stay curious, stay skeptical, STAY FROSTY, and above all – keep your claws sharp.

The Cat Whisperer has spoken.

… Mika and Koji

In closing…

As I reviewed this week’s column, Mika was asleep on my notes and Koji was attempting to “proofread” by walking across the keyboard. Neither seemed particularly interested in fact-checking.

Whether you agree with their assessment or not, one thing remains true: cats have a remarkable ability to cut through distractions and focus on what really matters—safety, comfort, trust, and making sure someone is paying attention when things seem out of balance.

In uncertain times, that’s not the worst advice.

Until next week, keep your treats stocked, your litter boxes clean, and your sense of humor intact.

Ciao,

Gassy Tummies and Gluten: Why Both You and Your Cat Might Need a Diet Reset

Have you ever felt a sudden, uncomfortable ballooning in your stomach after eating a  sandwich? Or perhaps you have noticed your feline companion clearing out the living room after visiting the litter box.

Gas and bloating are uncomfortable realities for humans. Surprisingly, they can also be a sign that your cat’s digestive tract is struggling. If you or your pet are dealing with frequent tummy trouble, the culprit might be hiding right in your food bowls: gluten and grain fillers.

Here is the science behind the bloat for both species, and how a quick dietary reset can bring peace back to your household.

The Science Behind the Human Bloat

When humans eat gluten-laden foods like bread, pasta, or pastries, the digestive system has to work overtime. Gluten is a complex structural protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Its specific amino acid chains are highly resistant to stomach acid, meaning your body struggles to break them down completely. These undigested proteins can irritate your gastrointestinal tract, causing inflammation and trapped gas.

However, gluten isn’t always the only villain. Wheat is also packed with fructans, a type of fermentable carbohydrate (FODMAP). Because your small intestine cannot easily absorb fructans, they travel directly to your large intestine. There, gut bacteria rapidly ferment these sugars. The byproduct of this feast? Massive amounts of hydrogen and methane gas.

If this happens every time you eat wheat, your body might be signaling a deeper issue, such as Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, a wheat allergy, or Celiac Disease.

Do Cats Get Gluten Bloat, Too?

While you are dealing with the effects of your morning toast, your cat might be facing a similar battle with their kibble. Cats are obligate carnivores. Their bodies are biologically engineered to process meat, fat, and bone—not heavy grain fillers like wheat, barley, or corn.

When low-quality pet foods use wheat gluten as a cheap protein substitute or binding agent, a cat’s short digestive tract cannot process it efficiently. Just like in humans, these unabsorbed carbohydrates and complex proteins sit in the gut and ferment.

If your cat has a grain or gluten intolerance, you might notice:

  • Feline flatulence: Excessively smelly gas or a pungent litter box.
  • Digestive distress: Frequent vomiting of dry food or chronic diarrhea.
  • Skin irritation: Constant scratching, fur loss, or hot spots.
  • Lethargy: A lack of energy right after mealtime.

The Blueprint for a Double Detox

If your household is feeling a bit too gassy, a coordinated dietary shift can help pinpoint the issue.

For the Human: Try a one-week swap. Trade out wheat-based products for naturally gluten-free alternatives like quinoa, brown rice, or oats. Note: If you suspect Celiac disease, consult a doctor for a blood test before cutting out gluten permanently, as you must be consuming it for the test to be accurate.

For the Cat: Transition your kitty to a high-quality, grain-free wet or dry food where a real meat (like chicken, turkey, or salmon) is the very first ingredient. Always transition pet food gradually over 7 to 10 days by mixing increasing amounts of the new food into the old food to avoid upsetting their stomach.

A happy gut means a happier home. By paying attention to what goes into both of your bowls, you can ditch the bloat and get back to comfortable cuddles.

Screaming Into the Void (Featuring Etsy Fees and – is anybody out there?)

I’ve been doing this for years now.

Writing. Posting. Sharing. Showing up like all the experts say you’re supposed to.

Blog posts? Check.
Newsletter? Check.
Social media? Oh, I am everywhere.

And the result?

…hello? Is this thing on?

Because from where I’m sitting, it feels a lot like I’ve been enthusiastically talking to myself on the internet since its inception – with two cats as my primary audience, and honestly, even they seem only mildly invested.

The Advice We’re All Supposed to Believe

You’ve heard it. I’ve heard it. We’ve all heard it.

“Just be consistent.”
“Keep showing up.”
“The algorithm will reward you.”
“It takes time.”

And sure—on paper, that sounds great. Inspirational, even.

But there’s a part they don’t really talk about.

The part where you are consistent.
You do keep showing up.
You do the work.

And still…

Nothing happens.

No flood of subscribers.
No sudden spike in engagement.
No magical moment where the internet collectively decides you’re worth paying attention to.

Just you. Refreshing stats. Again.

The Reality of Posting Into the Void

There’s a very specific kind of silence that comes with putting your work out there and hearing absolutely nothing back.

It’s not dramatic. It’s not loud.

It’s quiet.

It’s:

  • Checking your post stats five minutes after publishing (as if anything has changed)
  • Getting irrationally excited over one like
  • Wondering if people saw it… or just scrolled right past
  • Trying not to take it personally… and failing just a little

And here’s the thing—this isn’t just about numbers.

It’s about effort.

Because when you care about what you’re creating, silence feels like indifference. And indifference is a tough pill to swallow.

Let’s Talk About “Doing It Right” (A.K.A. Etsy Reality Check)

Let me give you a real-world example.

I sell on Etsy. I create things I’m genuinely proud of. I price them fairly.

So let’s say I make a sale—$80 order. Not bad, right?

Now let’s break it down:

  • Etsy fees take their cut
  • Listing fees nibble away
  • Payment processing grabs a piece
  • Shipping costs step in like they own the place

And then there’s the big one:
“Offer free shipping—it helps your listings!”

Sure. Of course it does.

Because nothing says “great business model” like pretending shipping doesn’t exist while quietly absorbing the cost yourself.

By the time everything is said and done?

That $80 order turns into… what? Maybe $20?

On a good day.

So now not only are you creating, marketing, packaging, and shipping—but you’re also playing financial gymnastics just to make it make sense.

And somehow, you’re still supposed to smile and “keep showing up.”

So… Why Bother?

This is the part where most people either quietly fade out…

…or decide to keep going.

And I’ll be honest—I’ve asked myself this more than once.

Why keep writing when nobody’s reading?
Why keep posting when nothing’s clicking?
Why keep pushing when the return feels… nonexistent?

Here’s the only answer I’ve come up with that doesn’t feel like nonsense:

Because stopping guarantees nothing.

At least this way—there’s a chance.

A small one? Sure.
A slow one? Absolutely.
A frustrating, hair-pulling, what-am-I-even-doing kind of one? Without a doubt.

But still… a chance.

And maybe that’s the whole game.

Not instant success. Not overnight growth.

Just stubbornly continuing when it would be easier to quit.

Then there’s my Editorial Team. They weight in…

Mika (Creative Director, Tortitude Division) has reviewed this post by sitting directly on my keyboard for most of it.

Koji (Head of Quality Control) has ensured all materials meet his standards by knocking a pen off the desk and walking away.

Neither of them care about analytics.
Neither of them are concerned with engagement metrics.
Neither of them have once asked about subscriber growth.

And yet—they show up. Every day.

Unbothered. Unimpressed. Consistent.

Honestly… they might be onto something.

Final Thoughts From the Void

If you’re out there creating—writing, making, posting, building—and it feels like nobody’s paying attention…

You’re not alone.

Not even a little.

Some of us are just… a little quieter about it.

But we’re still here.

Still showing up.
Still trying.
Still hitting “publish” even when it feels like shouting into empty space.

And maybe—just maybe—eventually, someone hears it.

Until then…

I’ll be here.
Posting into the void.

With two cats.

Who remain deeply unimpressed.
